Homemade Honey Fermented Ginger

Is there any better combination? Not only will you get the benefits of honey but also the spice and warmth of ginger. Two of my favorite things for long winter days. This recipe can be used for so many things. If you have a sore throat, cough, or flu symptoms this is your number one remedy. Also can be used with other foods such as hot pancakes, waffles, or crepes. You can add a spoonful to your favorite tea or just mix it with some warm water to get all the benefits. Ginger Honey

Ginger roots.

There are only two simple ingredients as you can imagine. I learned to love the pickled ginger you get in a sushi restaurant but this is a little different than that. Honey has been recognized as the food that never goes bad. It has been used for thousands of years and has many healing properties. For this recipe, it’s good if you can get your hands on some raw honey. Also for ginger would be great if you can get some organic ones and after that, the process is quite simple.

  • Peel the ginger root and slice it with a mandolin or a knife into nice thin slices.
  • Put the sliced ginger in a glass jar and completely cover it with honey. But leave some space on the top so it’s not full to the brim.
  • Seal the jar and leave it be in room temperature for at least 2 weeks or up to three months. The longer you leave it for the taste will become stronger.
  • Open the glass jar daily to release the gasses and give it a stir. You will notice the honey will start to get a darker color and that is your first sign that fermentation is underway.
    • Once you like the taste you can place it in your fridge and that will slow down the fermentation process. You can store it in the fridge for up to a year.

Like all fermented foods, it will be packed with useful probiotics to improve your gut health. Honey and ginger as some of the most beneficial foods out there. Honey is a natural cough suppressant, it’s full of vitamins and minerals. Both of them together will help reduce inflammation, relieve flu symptoms, help with digestion problems, help to boost your immune system, and reduce your cholesterol.

If you are giving this to young children have in mind that honey is recommended to give to children over 1 year of age. Raw honey is the most unrefined type of honey and has the most nutrients. The recommended dose for children would be one teaspoon. Adults can consume as much as they want.
