Why remembering dreams could be important?

History is full of accounts where people would search for answers to important questions in their own dreams. They would look for people skillful in interpreting them and finding hidden messages in symbols in things that would appear in their minds during sleep. Even today books that interpret dreams are sold almost daily. So it’s not surprising that dreams have had such a massive influence on a person’s decisions and motivations.

When confronted with important life events, decisions, or milestones people will look for comfort and assurance in their own minds. And there are things we can do to remember them better.

  • Stay in the same position in the first 90 seconds after waking up. Try to keep calm and close your eyes. The things you have been dreaming about will come back and you will be able to remember what you have been seeing when sleeping.
  • Write down your dreams while they are fresh. The longer you wait the fewer details you will be able to remember. If you don’t write them down your memories will be gone by breakfast. Nobody knows why it’s too hard to remember but that’s how it is. Make it even easier for yourself. Take a voice recorder on your phone and describe what you remember for later.
  • Try to take B6 vitamins before you go to bed. Some studies have proven the connection between taking this particular vitamin and being able to remember your dreams. But don’t overdose. You shouldn’t be taking more than 100 mg per day for an adult person.

Not everyone can remember easily

A dream journal is a great thing to have.

Some people will remember their dreams easier than others. Studies have shown that women have a better memory than men when it comes to their dreams. Young adolescent women will be a category of people who will be the easiest to tell us what they have been dreaming about. Also, people who suffer from anxiety will have better chances of remembering when compared to people who are on medications. If you have certain health conditions like sleep apnea it could make it harder for you to remember.

But why is it ever important? Dreams are after all only dreams. When you are spending one-third of your life sleeping and your mind is out of your control. Don’t you want to remember what amazing and creative things you can imagine? Dreaming is a personal experience that can show you how you actually feel. Your dreams can guide you to a path of well-being and make you focus more on your own feelings. That is something we maybe don’t have enough courage for in the real life.
